To mark the World Contraception Day 2008, DSW undertook a
number of activities in Kenya. The highlight was the participation at
the grand event in Nairobi, where DSW youth clubs members on board a caravan
equipped with a music system moved around the Nairobi Slums and informed over
20,000 people on the importance of contraceptives and reproductive health.
DSW Kenya, as a key implementing partner with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, participated in the preparatory activities for a campaign to mark the International Youth Day. In collaboration with the ministry DSW provided technical and financial resources to the celebration of the international youth day in Eastern, Western and Coast region in order to increase the level of awareness on HIV and pertinent sexual and reproductive health issues among young people. These activities included adolescent sexual and reproductive health modelling activities, provision of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services in integrated health camps, distribution of condoms, and behaviour change communication materials.
40 participants took part in a 5-day intensive training in community mobilisation skills. The participants were drawn from the Youth-to-Youth networks, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Ministry of Health. The training was conducted by DSW-trained moderators, who were supported by a Training Officer from Family Programmes Promotion Services (FPPS) for the purpose of ensuring quality assurance. The trained participants will support the community advocacy campaigns, whose goal is to create community-wide awareness and education against HIV/AIDS prevalence and sexual and reproductive health risks.
